That’s a solid 🙋🏼‍♀️🙋🏼‍♀️ from me.

Parents dream of the life their children will have. When they realize that dream may not come true, that their child may face challenges they hadn’t imagined, that’s HARD.

In these moments, we want to give hope, but never false hope. Obviously we can’t see the future and could never give them the answer they *really* want.

BUT

We can do this:
💛emphasize their child’s strengths
💛explain the “big picture” of our plan of care
💛explain that COMMUNICATION does not necessarily mean being verbal, and that’s okay
💛drive-home that our priority is to help their child communicate in a way that is functional for them at this time

Maybe someday we’ll live in a world where spoken language isn’t viewed as the end-all-be-all. And maybe someday everybody will realize a person’s ability to use spoken language has very little to do with their intelligence or worthiness. Until then... we’ll do some hand-holding and educating and that’s okay.

The autistic community as a whole has a strong preference for identity-first language. I’ll include a link in my bio with an explanation of why, from the Autistic Self Advocacy Network’s website.

I know it’s a difficult change to make. We have been drilled and drilled about person-first language. Hearing someone say “autistic student” may make you bristle at first.

BUT.

It is important to listen to the preferences of the community you’re referring to. So here’s a reminder in case this is an adjustment for you! I’ll keep sharing this info for as long as people keep emailing me to correct me. 🤪

Special interests, or specific interests, are one

Special interests, or specific interests, are one of the most awesome characteristics of autistic people, in my opinion. It makes me so sad to hear of children who only have access to their FAVORITE things (not talking about screens) as a reward.

These objects or subjects inspire such PASSION in autistic people, why not make that the focus of therapy? Or the topic of your conversation? Imagine the rapport you could build and the focus your student would have on the task at hand.

🙌🏻search for online activities related to their interest
🙌🏻buy character figurines from the dollar store
🙌🏻create stories or word lists related to their interest
